Ahava: Deadsea Mineral Bath Salts

The mysteries of life are beyond comprehension. Last night before I knew the sorrow today would bring my ailing lower back called me to soak in Ahava Lavendar Bath Salts. I had avoided lavender baths for years because they reminded me of my ex, who I loved dearly and lost to the diseases that are the cruel mystery of this world.

So there I was, crippled in pain. Soaking in natural salts straight from the dead sea. Completely unaware that his life was coming to an end at that very same moment.

I soaked as long as I could hoping some visceral yet subconscious wave would wash over my scared, exhausted body and bring some of the magic healing of the dead sea with it. Ahava led me into that night and revealed the great promise of the dead sea: a healing oasis is possible amidst the greatest faith and strife on earth.

That was three weeks ago. I slept that night with a peace I had not known in years and I've needed every ounce of that peace to make it through the shock of the next morning and the last three weeks. Take heed from the geographic axiom of the dead sea: the greatest peace is something you can reach for amidst the greatest unrest. Take some sacred healing tools with you on this sweet, heart-breaking journey.

June Jacobs Pumpkin Scrub Puts Everything Back Together

Remember a few months ago when I said everything fell apart? And I knew, because I'm the wise old age of 31, that it was just part of everything being put back together? Well, I was right. In a major way. Life is actually better than I could have ever imagined and it all started with this amazing, paraben-free, plush pumpkin scrub.

In the middle of my life falling apart a lovely little package from New York's finest PR girls arrived and it had this detoxifying polish pouring over with powerful pumpkin enzyme,  crushed bamboo and jojoba micro beads to help remove every piece of dirt that was left over from my old toxic life. When it felt like I had nothing I started with this little bottle, held on to every ounce of faith, and started scrubbing away every ounce of toxins. And it worked. Remarkably well. I can't wait to tell you all about my new life. Enjoy!

For the Love of a Mani-Pedi

Yesterday was one of those days when it felt like everything was falling apart. The good thing about being 31 is that you know everything has fallen apart before and it's part of everything getting better. I also know it's best to wait it out in the care of your loving manicurist AND the best new color NYC's adorable PR girls can find. So. Lessons you can learn from my bad day 1. toxin free, feminine, beautiful nail colors can improve your day. 2. Butter's "Teddy Girl" is the most amazing thing I've had on my nails in the last two years.

Top 5 Things I Learned by Not Blogging

1) La Mer Radiant Concealer with SPF is a non-negotiable part of my beauty regiment. That I just ran out last week may or may not be related to my re-emergence as a pre-eminent blogger of all things beautiful in the world.

2) Life is best when you expect people to be as nice to you as PR girls (demand they exit when they consistently fail at this).

3) Organic really is best when it comes to beauty/household/anything that might give you cancer products.

4) Beauty IS about what's inside. If you loose your spark, it can come back from the inside out OR the outside in but it can never be borrowed.

5) People will miss what you write. My dear ex-step-mother and loyal reader Betty both
exclaimed today "You started blogging again!" Love that!

Viva

I know, I left you. It's been a few years and, mostly, I had some things to figure out - offline.

Professionally, I've been building my chops as a social media strategist extraordinaire. Personally, I've been on the mat (power vinyasa style) and learning some old, hard lessons in the relationship department. With those lessons learned, a new (3 month old) job, a new apartment in a new town, I thought it was time to start writing again. I'll share what I've learned and of course the best ways to be absolutely fabulous to ourselves as beautiful, strong women.

Energise yourself with a spa break

In Greek mythology, a number of natural springs and tidal pools were said to have been blessed by the gods to cure disease and ease people’s ailments. The ancient Greeks established bathing facilities around these sacred pools and left offerings to the gods after they bathed, in the hope of being restored to health. Thousands of years later, we can reflect on these time-honoured rituals as the beginnings of what we now know as health spas.

Though tributes to deities and hopes of miracle cures have subsided, the practice of using baths, hot springs and vapour baths to boost health continues to help people all over the world to relax, unwind and repair their bodies and minds. The benefits of spa breaks in the middle of hectic modern lives are manifold and, though the treatments people receive at spas are of a non-medical nature, they are very much endorsed by doctors as a good way to improve the general health of the body and mind.

The strain put on the body by stress and fatigue can lead to the development of other health problems such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and weight gain. A relaxing spa weekend taken three or four times a year can significantly help to relieve stress by taking a person away from their job, their daily tasks and any other factors that may be contributing to the pressure on their mind or body.

The tradition of bathing to improve health has developed into sophisticated hydrotherapy treatments. Aerated baths use heat and the release of millions of bubbles to relax and regenerate people taking spa breaks. The circulating currents allow for an immediate transfer of heat to the body, relaxing tense muscles and increasing blood flow to the tissues.

Massage is one of the most popular and beneficial treatments offered by health spas. Loosening tight, knotted muscles and increasing the flexibility of the joints is perhaps the most obvious benefit of spa massage but its stress-relieving effects are powerful and it can also promote the regeneration of tissues within the body. Massage helps to combat high blood pressure by dilating capillaries, allowing an increased flow of oxygen to the muscles and removing waste products and toxins.

Other popular treatments at modern spa facilities include hot stone therapy, in which water-heated stones are placed on certain parts of the body, relaxing the muscles and expanding the blood vessels. Cold stones are sometimes used immediately after to constrict the blood vessels again, encouraging the body to detox and heal by increasing lymph flow.

There are few parts of the body that spa treatments cannot benefit and the particular areas covered by different spa deals can vary widely. Mud baths, peat pulp baths, body wraps and facial cleansing all help the complexion as well as having a relaxing effect on the body, while spas also offer nutrition and weight guidance, yoga, meditation and heat treatments such as saunas and steam baths.

MAJOR Kiehl's Bargain on Winter Skin Love.

So I've been using this kit for a week now and I've never been so psyched about skincare dedicated to winter skin. I'm Italian so increasing moisture (read:oil) has never really been my bag-gy under eye circle. But Kiehl's went to all the trouble of sourcing its Antarcticine ingredient from Antarctica so I thought "I should at least try it." Revolutionary. Shinny-healthy-quenched-model skin. For $30 there is no reason not to commit your entire winter skin routine (and a refreshingly small portion of your beauty budget, really) to this truly brilliant little kit. I LOVE it and it lasts, seemingly, for an ice age with only the littlest quantity providing amazing daily results. Enjoy!

Ultra Facial Moisturizer Kit ($29.50) includes:

•Ultra Facial Cleanser (1 oz)
•Ultra Facial Toner (1.4 oz)
•Ultra Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15 (4.2 oz.)

SWIMSPOT.COM on Beauty's SPOT

I'm going to assume that though there is no Bikni-worthy airline ticket in my hand at this very moment, the universe has brought Swimspot.com into my blogging life as a whole, leap-before-the-net-(read Plane Ticket)-appears thing.

Um cause have you ever booked a last minute I'm-going-to-die-if-I-wake-up-to-another-grey-winter-weather-day trip and then actually tried to get a decent (read HOT) bathing suit at that (already awful) time of year? Yeah, me too. And the Target sales rack is majorly depressing at that time of year.

So when Swimspot.com came calling for bloggers opinion on their “Fit Specialist Program” – a free “personal shopper” for bathing suits I wasn't too optimistic. Too much target. Not enough Swimspot. Here's my two cents. Selection. AMAZING. Sizing chart? Phenom. Swimspot’s “Bikini Builder” that allows you to mix & match or mismatch the perfect swim look from separates (www.swimspot.com/bikini-builder.aspx)? Pretty awesome but would like a bigger selection within the tool itself. Here was my default combo since I couldn't actually see my blue NEXT top and black NEXT bottom together.

Though I don't have my NEXT dream bikini in hand yet, I think I have found the best bikini ever. The brilliance: using the top of a classic yoga pant style (which makes every woman about a thousand times more attractive) as the WHOLE bikini bottom. Amazing. Enough said. I'll fill you on the trip and the Bikini as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, Enjoy!

Limited-Edition Wild Storm Nail Polish by Estee Lauder

I've got three colors on my mani-pedi as we speak and I'm not mid-treatment. I'll let you do the math. I will say this though. I effing love all of them. The one below will be my all-about-business color for the remainder of the winter and I will transition it into it's-motorcycle-riding-weather color in the spring.

It's called, aptly, Wild Storm. Here's to a bigger, brighter, wilder 2011. Enjoy!

Never Leave Your Manduka

I'm starting to wonder if I have unknowingly joined a cult. Due to some fairly horrendous packing choices and poor organization on the day before my departure, I somehow left my Manduka behind. Not once in 2010 did I leave my home for more than 24 hours without my Manduka. And I have now made peace with the idea that cult or not, I literally can not leave home with out a Manduka and access to POWER Vinyasa.

Imagine yourself. Nestled into your geographic spiritual home; embedded in the breath-stealing San Juan Mountains, in the company of loving, lovely family and totally unable to be. No yoga mat, no way to live. So if you are new to yoga, or even old to yoga and have never bonded with a Manduka, think Avatar, and go here. My next Manduka will be the travel-friendly lovely that provides insurance against even the WORST pre-departure experiences. Enjoy!

Lands' End Canvas: Fingerless Gloves

I can not tell you the number of times I have heard "WHAT ARE THOSE? I LOVE THEM!" In the last week. I have worn these cable-knit, olive-colored beauties every day for the last five days. Under 3/4 length cropped sweaters, over cotton stretch long tee's, over tight knit sweaters, with a tank at 6:30 a.m. yoga and yes, even, to bed. And in every location at least one person (except in bed of course) has said....

We in North Carolina have been borrowing some of Lands' End's native arctic weather but still even when winter thaws this year I'll be dreaming up excuses to work these comfy beauties into my wardrobe. And it has nothing to do with the fact that these were blogger swag. I LOVE them for reals. They rock.

La Mer Introduces The Eye Balm Intense, Fall 2010

La Mer’s latest innovation, The Eye Balm Intense, launches this fall. In fact I've known about it for a few weeks but wasn't allowed to tell you until Sept. 1. Can you imagine, knowing about this and not being able to share with you girls? It's been hell - I assure you. I coped by telling my coworkers instead who all now look about 10 years younger and are a little cash-poorer after their latest visits to the local La Mer counters.

Powered with a triple concentration of La Mer’s seaborne elixir—The Miracle Broth™, state-of-the-art Marine De-Puff Ferment™ and exclusive Lifting Ferment™, The Eye Balm Intense comforts skin with the cooling sensation of pure hydration. With use, the appearance of lines and wrinkles diminishes. Visible puffiness is smoothed. I HIGHLY recommend using with The Radiant Concealer SPF 25. A dab of each under the eyes and, essentially, you've got yourself a really inexpensive eye lift. Enjoy!

The Same Questions I Ask Everyone with June Jacobs

What is your first memory of beauty products?
As a child I suffered from acne so my first memory of beauty products was using acne treatment products. They were so awful to use because they smelled horrible and often left my skin dry and flaky. It has been my mission with the creation of my new acne collection (launching in February 2011) to use natural ingredients that are powerful, yet gentle and help to keep skin clear, and blemish free.

At what age did you start wearing makeup?
I started wearing makeup and really taking care of my skin at the age of 16.

If you could apply only one product for the next month what would it be?
I would die if I could not use my moisturizer. First and foremost, moisturizer helps to hydrate the skin leaving it soft, smooth and younger looking. In a pinch, a moisturizer can be used as a cleanser and can even remove makeup.

If you could give one product to all women in the world what would it be?
My new Acne Spot Treatment! Whether you are young or old, we all have blemishes. My new vanishing spot treatment is absolutely amazing because it can be used in the a.m. or p.m as an emergency spot treatment and also may be used to treat and prevent routine acne. Everyone feels and looks their best when their skin is clear and blemish free!

If you could ban one harmful ingredient from all beauty products what would it be?
I would ban parabens, which are a specific type of preservative that protect food and cosmetics against microbial contaminants, specifically yeast and mold. Recent studies show that parabens may cause cancer and cause allergic reactions/skin rashes. I have recently reformulated my entire line and have removed all parabens and I have seen such a difference in my formulas, they are more efficacious and feel and smell absolutely wonderful.

What is your favorite skincare ingredient?
My favorite ingredient is Gogi Berry. I eat them every day and I have added Goji Berry extract to every one of my products because they are the most powerful anti-oxidant that helps neutralize free radicals, protect skin from environmental toxins and combat the visible signs of premature aging. They are known as “The King of All Berries” and contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, over 18 different amino acids and is a source of Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C. It is rich in polysaccharides to help support intercellular communication providing essential nutrients to cells which encourages healthy immune function.

What is the last product you created?
The last product I created was my Radiant Refining Exfoliating Powder which is my new, favorite product because it is gentle enough to use everyday and leaves your skin soft and silky smooth. This unique exfoliating powder activates upon contact with water and gently sweeps away dead skin cells with rice, bamboo, papain and salicylic acid, leaving skin soft, smooth and clarified. Natural brightening ingredients, lemon peel, bearberry root, mulberry root and licorice extract help balance overall skin tone, while tea tree oil and willow bark extract help absorb oil. It also includes my powerful patent pending anti-oxidant blend of white, red and green tea extracts combined with goji berry, pomegranate and grape seed extracts help to neutralize free radicals, protect skin from environmental toxins and combat the visible signs of premature aging. Helps refine the skin’s texture and tone leaving it with a flawless, radiant finish.

Who is the business woman you most admire?
I truly admire my dear friend, Gretchen Monahan. She is the entrepreneur behind the Needham-based Gretta Enterprises owns three local salons (Grettacole), two clothing boutiques (Gretta Luxe), and a spa called G Spa. She appears weekly as a style expert on "Rachael Ray" in New York and locally on Channel 7 for a segment called "Gretta's Got It." She is also a design consultant for shoe brands Via Spiga and Naturalizer, she is a consultant for Dove's hair-care line, launching a line of shoes, and writing a how-to book on dressing well. I am also working with her on creating her own line of beauty products…and that is not all!

Whose beauty do you most admire?
I have always been fascinated by how people in different countries take care of their skin. Wherever I travel, I spend hours in various stores and spas looking at the products and speaking to the sales associates and I have to say that I admire Asian women’s skin the most…they have an overall radiance to their skin that gives them a young, healthy glow. In my travels to Asia I am always amazed to see how many women have absolutely flawless skin and it is because they take such great care of their skin, by using a comprehensive skincare regimen that incorporates products that help to illuminate the skin and reduce the signs of sun damage and hyperpigmentation. Their beauty was the inspiration for my Brightening Serum and Moisturizer which include natural botanical brighteners that give an overall radiance to the skin.

What was your best Spa experience?
I received the most amazing massage of my life in Phuket, Thailand. There is something so special about receiving a therapeutic Thai massage while staring out at the white sands and deep blue Andaman Sea.

Besides your own, what is your favorite brand?
I love Trish McEvoy. Trish has always been committed to the creation of the highest quality products and she is a genius for creating her iconic Makeup Planner. I am a firm believer in her guiding philosophy that women should be able to maintain a standard of beauty and not be obligated to sacrifice their beauty because of the constraints of time, space and age.
