The September Issue: When Largess Was Still Charming

To buy a press pass or not? After watching this the answer is, I think, to buy.

Michelle Obama's Magazine Covers!

Michelle Obama will be the second First Lady in history to grace the cover of Vogue next month and we could pee our pants we are so excited. (I'm not much on politics but I am enormous on Michelle Obama's fashion.) Seriously, I just put on my new Stila Lip Glaze in Cranberry to celebrate.
Commander-in-fashion-chief Ms. Ana Wintour says, "Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama's election campaign, though I don't think any of us at Vogue initially realized that would include the difference that was going to be made by First Lady Michelle Obama's wardrobe ... It's inspiring to see our first lady so serene and secure in her personal style."

It's also inspiring to see that Vogue was Michelle's second stop on the magazine campaign trail. She first appeared, as seen above, in the March 09 issue of Today's Black Woman (which happens to also feature our FAV nail polish Nubar.)

Vogue in 30 Seconds

Cover story: Anne Hathaway is much less annoying in print.

Oribe, the singularly named stylist who found fame designing the tresses of supermodels back in the 90s is finally bringing his skills to the people with a new line. His website is a MUST visit. (A note to the editors of Vogue, your interns are too young if they honestly think the supermodel heyday was 1984. Where is Ms. Wintour's eagle eye on that misprint?)

Visit escapetoshape.com to plan your next eco-fitness-spa-adventure. Who doesn't want a facial while trekking between the Atlas Mountains and Medina? Well I suppose it didn't occur to Mohammed but times, clearly, have changed.

Unless Jackson Pollock is designing your Smashbox spring compact, your shadows may be out of date.

The item to covet on the last page is not an exorbently expensive, devastatingly beautiful piece of jewlery as per usual but rather this $500 clutch-sized Dell Mini 9 laptop.

Vogue Chic Sheet

Introducing a new column here at the SPOT - Chic Sheet. It's like spark notes but for the beauty obsessed. For the inaugural Chic-Sheet I present this month's Vogue -Andre -fashion. In other words, here's what beauty girls got from Vogue this month.

At 40 Naomi Watts is charged with being the face of the only branch of Thierry Mugler's empire in which he still has a hand, fragrance. Although his line ascended the heights of fashion mountain back when bangs were big it has revamped itself without him while he designs costumes in Vegas. (And isn't that where 80's fashion belongs - Vegas?) Anywho Naomi's first bit as Angel does more than justice to one of the world's best selling fragrances.

Henry Matisse procreated. So did the Moet Hennessy clan. Their progeny smell fabulous via MoMA worthy, earth-friendly, refillable packaging. For a cool $1500 your Kilian (Hensesy Wunderkind) Perfume can reside in a Sophie Matisse original. Pick your scent at Kilian.

In Greece sap is called Mastiha. In New York you can buy anything and everything with this Mediterranean nostrum at the Mastihashop outpost. The rest of us American saps can buy the Greek beauty goods online. Korres included.

Beauty's Product: Behind Keira's Look on the Vogue Cover.

If you are a makeup fanatic you must must must view this slide show of products used on Keira Knightley for this month's Vogue Cover. Also, check out these behind the scenes tips from Gucci Westman on how he applied the beautiful products on Ms. Knightley. Note that I am not pointing you toward the lead hair stylist's tips. Only the most stylish hipsters will be attempting to pull that hair off.

Beauty's Travel: Vogue's Age Issue is a Life Saver

I had an amazing trip to New York City. I was bowled over at every turn with the generosity of friends old and new, artistic gargoyles crammed into each nook and cranny of aging buildings, and fully organic mani-pedies. Beauty's SPOT used to live in New York and I must say, it's hard to leave. Literally. JetBlue may have Bliss on board but getting on board, at least tonight in JFK is one step to the right of impossible. Luckily, I had Vogue's age issue tucked into my lovely new white bucket bag. I am highly impressed by this issue (now that I have read it Kate Moss to Calle.) As a former Vogue subscriber, the journalism in this issue made me rethink the recycling bin reflex invoked by Vogue's lovely "we miss you" envelopes that arrive in my PO box every so often. There is a must-read, surprisingly down to earth retrospective of YSL by Andre Leon Talley. Another of my favorite pieces was on Ziyi Zhang, the delicate, astonishingly lifelike porcelain doll from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. If you can't pry your fingers off of the five dollar newsstand price for this issue (which I totally understand given the cost of sustenance these days) this video is equally enjoyable and free thanks to the lovelies at Vogue and their mad men sugar daddies. Thanks again to our truly remarkable friends and also to our comrade in beauty blogging shenanigans Anne from the Jet Set Girls.

The Making of Vogue's August 2008 Age Issue

In case you can't watch video at work I'll summarize for you: Kate Moss peaked at 16, Chris Evert's best beauty advice is sunscreen, multivitamins, and listening to vogue stylists who say, "Go with the Nina Ricci."
